First Instance of Lara becoming the highest individual scorer in test cricket
Lara first achieved this feet in Apr 1994. In a match against England at St John’s in April 1994 Lara scored huge 375 runs in West Indies 1st inning (full scorecard). By scoring those runs Lara surpassed the 38 year old highest individual test score record of Sir Garfield Sobers which came against Pakistan in a match at Kingston back in Feb-Mar 1958 (full scorecard).
Matthew Hayden broke the record of highest individual test score
Lara was the record holder of highest individual test score from 1994 till his record of 375 was shattered by Matthew Hayden of Australia in Oct 2003. In a match against Zimbabwe at Perth in October 2003, Hayden broke the highest individual test score record of Brian Lara by scoring 380 runs in that match. With the help of of heroics Australia scored a huge total of 735 runs for 6 wickets in their first inning and eventually won the match by inning and 175 runs (scorecard).
Lara Recaptured the throne of highest individual test score
However, exactly after 6 months regain the record of highest individual test score again. It was not possible for Lara to remain quiet after seeing his throne highest individual run scorer being captured by any other batsman.
England team was touring West Indies and in the fourth Test at Saint Johns in April 2004, Lara scored 400 runs in the first inning of West Indies. This is the first time that any individual achieved a 400 run mark in test cricket history. West Indies put a massive 751 runs for 5 wickets in their first inning (full scorecard).
