Highest Partnerships by Debutants in ODIs, Ryan Watson and Neil McCallum
Scotland scored 203 runs for 8 wickets and lost to Pakistan by 5 wickets in this match but the match is still remembered for this partnership record.
Inzamam passed up the opportunity to take early batting practice and instead asked Scotland to bat first. This decision paid off as Umar Gul and Mohammad Asif quickly got Scotland’s score to 20 for 4, with the help of Gavin Hamilton’s run out.
After surviving the strong performance of Asif and Gul, Watson hit a poor first over from Razzaq for 16 runs and led Scotland to a strong start. He also hit Danish Kaneria for a six over deep midwicket. Watson reached his half-century in 49 balls, surprising Pakistan with Scotland’s strong performance.
Watson received excellent assistance from McCallum, who was content to take a supportive role while still contributing to the score. McCallum’s half-century came in 100 balls as the duo set a new record for Scotland’s highest partnership against a full international team. Watson was caught by Afridi, and the innings fell apart after a productive 55-run partnership between McCallum and Douglas Lockhart. Malik took three wickets in the final stages and prevented the score from reaching 230.
Scotland put up a strong fight against Pakistan, showing a level of performance that the struggling England team would have welcomed. Despite falling short, the match was a valuable experience for all involved.
